Late Saxon trapezoidal buckle
Description
English: Incomplete Middle Saxon/Late Saxon trapezoidal buckle plate or strap fitting, worn and corroded broken at both ends, decorated with two possible stylised heads cast in high relief lying longitudinally jaw-to-jaw or snout-to-snout, one pierced by a broken large circular hole, the other with dots for eyes and recessed, flat sectioned end with very worn break across traces of a rivet-hole, >26 x 9mm. Stylistically similar finds are known from a number of sites including Elsing (HER 40644), Postwick (HER 25984), Wendling (HER 40868), Norwich (HER 1999) and Fishergate, York (Rogers 1993) fig.652, no.5320. 9th century.
