Title
Late medieval buckle plate
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy buckle plate dating to the twelfth to fourteenth centuries AD. The fragment comprises the upper part of the plate which is rectangular in plan and section. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with a integrally cast motif of a ?lion or griffin passant regardant facing right. At one end, there are two semi-circular extensions, all that remains of the recess for the buckle frame and slot of the pin. At the other end, there are two circular rivet holes, situated at each corner of the plate. The underside of the plate is plain. It measures 29mm in length, 17mm in width and 2mm in thickness.

Similar buckle plates are illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991) p. 111, nos. 500 and 501, which are dated to the thirteenth century AD.
