Title |
Late medieval iron horseshoe |
||
Description |
English: An iron Medieval horse shoe, dating between 1200-1400AD. The nails are square and rectangular in section and the shoe ends in folded over calkins (one of which has broken off). The edge of the toe has no clip to grip the hoof, which is a post-Medieval innovation. The size of this horse shoe is more typical of the later Medieval period, where shoes can be between 115-120mm in overall width. This horse shoe measures 118.12mm long x 116.88mm wide x 6.26mm thick, weighing 170g. There is a reference to this in John Clark’s ‘Medieval horseshoes’; datasheet 4, 1986. |
