Title |
English: Launching a dory from a halibut fishing boat, ca. 1920 |

Description |
English: Before 1930, halibut steamers used small boats called dories for setting the longlines and hauling them back in. Each steamer carried a dozen or more dories which were stored on the deck of the fishing boat and lowered over the side as needed. Launching a dory could be quite dangerous in cold weather and high seas.
This photo shows the crew lowering a dory over the side of a fishing boat somewhere in the northern Pacific Ocean. Coils of fishing line and a nest of dories sit nearby on the deck. The photo was probably taken on board the halibut steamer "Polaris" sometime between 1913 and 1927.
