[edit]DescriptionLaverna Katie Dollimore.jpg |
English: Laverna Katie Dollimore (January 22, 1922 to October 24, 2011) was a member of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (a WRCN, W-3501) during World War II. Posted to HMCS Cornwallis, she became a Leading WRCN responsible for provisioning the base with food. She passed the Petty Officer exam, but the war ended before she was promoted.
After a few secretarial and accounting positions, she joined the Department of External Affairs in 1956. Her career went from danger-zone to hot spot, including Cairo after the Suez Crisis, Leopoldville (now Kinshasa, D.R. Congo), Moscow during the Cold War, Laos during the Vietnam Conflict, and Tehran during the Iran hostage crisis. Dollimore was one of seven Canadian embassy staff, including Ken Taylor, that were awarded the Order of Canada for their work in rescuing six American diplomats. Laverna Dollimore worked at the Dominion Paper Box Company before the war alongside Margaret McLeod. |
