Français : Ce jeu d’échecs a été entièrement sculpté dans les défenses d’un grand éléphant d’Afrique. Par leurs dimensions et leur qualité, ses pièces d’échecs en ivoire sont les plus anciennes de cette importance connues en Occident. Selon la légende, le jeu, digne d’un roi, aurait été offert à Charlemagne.
En réalité, il a été réalisé en Italie du Sud à la fin du XIe siècle, bien après son règne, et ne lui a donc pas appartenu. Certaines pièces du jeu, comme le char ou l’éléphant, évoquent les origines indiennes du jeu d’échecs, et de son évolution lors du passage en Occident.
