Description

Le minaret de style hispano-mauresque date de 1834

La fondation de la mosquée ez-Zitouna (mosquée de l'Olivier) date de la naissance de la ville musulmane en 736 (734 ?). Elle a été reconstruite un siècle plus tard par l'émir aghlabide Ibrahim Ibn Ahmed, sur le modèle de la mosquée de Kairouan, puis remaniée plusieurs fois. C'est la mosquée la plus ancienne de Tunis. La salle de prière hypostyle est le chef d'oeuvre de la mosquée.Elle peut accueillir 2.000 fidèles dans ses 15 nefs soutenues par 184 colonnes antiques provenant de Carthage. La galerie qui borde la cour sur trois cotés a été construite par les Turcs en 1653.
