Description
Français : La place des Martyrs et le musée archéologique (Cherchell)

Au centre de la ville, la place des Martyrs (à droite) est construite à l'endroit de l'ancien forum romain (voir les colonnes). Le musée d'archéologie à gauche sur la photo, donne sur cette place.

La ville de Cherchell est l'ancienne Césarée romaine, elle a conservé moins de vestiges archéologiques que Tipaza mais possède un musée de sculptures antiques exceptionnelles.

Des traces d'une colonie punique du Vème siècle av. J.C. ont été retrouvées à Cherchell. La ville est devenue importante au 1er siècle après J.C. sous le règne de Juba II, roi de Maurétanie. Juba II épousa Cléopatre Séléné, la fille de Cléopatre et de Marc Antoine.
