| Description | The solitary, industrious leafcutter bee (my favorite) preparing to take a newly cut section of coin vine leaf back to her nest. After some positioning and navigational fixes, she slowly lifted off like a helicopter sky-crane, turned, hovered a moment and flew away. They nest in soft, rotted wood and use the leaf fragments to fashion their nest cells. There were several precise cuts from previous visits on this plant. I usually see this species busily (and noisily) collecting pollen...this is the first one I've photographed cutting leaves. She will provision each nest cell with a mixture of nectar and pollen for the baby bees to eat :) |
