Notes Macchi states; th third quarter of century, France, unsual, puzzling binding: 1) azured border ovals and triple gilt background dots are typically French; 2) the centrepiece (I., Die Einbände der Palatina, pl. CLIX) was used by the Genevan Goldast-Meister active, according to I. Schunke (Ilse Schunke, Der Genfer Bucheinband, p. 38-64) from c. 1586 until 1602, christened for the bindings he bound for Melchior Goldast von Haiminsfeld. His centerpieces have pointed ends; 38 examples are kept in the Vatican Library; 3) the cornerpieces were used by English Renaissance binders like the Dudley binder (H. M. Nixon, Sixteenth-century gold-tooled bookbindings., p. 152-156, n. 39) and the Morocco binder, even if this last was of French origin. Similar of central panels stamp hanging tools as Davis 381. For a similar centrepiece and hanging tools, see J. R. Abbey, Catalogue of valuable printed books and fine bindings, p. 66, lot 184, pl. 22- shelfmark C.20.c.15, Davis 385.
