Notes letter from 2nd Lieutenant Leonard James Shaw (7-1323 2nd Auckland Battalion), France 3-7-1916 to his niece Jessie Osborne, Opuatia (near Mercer). Letter written from the front-line trenches - enclosing a poppy (poppy accessioned separately 2002.82.1) "3-7-16 My Dear Jessie, Just a few lines with these little flowers that I am sending you. They have been piced by me right at the front trenches. I thought you might like some little thing, and pieces of shells are too big to post, and any rate I think flowers much nicer. Thanks for your last nice letter. I got it a few days ago. How is Jack keeping. Did you have a good time when he was home in April. He will be getting quite a city dandy now. Give Luna (.) and Gwen a kiss each for me. Much love from Uncle Len." GENERAL NOTES- While serving overseas during WW1 Len Shaw (2nd Lieutenant Leonard James Shaw, 7-1323, 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment) of Opuatia near Mercer, corresponded with his niece Jessie Osborne (then aged 12-14 years). Among the letters she received is a letter enclosing a pressed poppy he had picked in the front-line trenches. Len Shaw was killed in action France on 29.9.1918. His brother Leslie Shaw wrote home describing the circumstances of his brother's death.
