St. Louis

My Dear Eliot

Your two letters about Genl Scofield recd & have [three words unclear] You letter to the secy was endured by Gen Hitchcock, & hit[?] the white&

There is no danger whatever of Scofield being held back from here about Negros_ much more of his being foiled in doing any thing by his old Provo. Marshals to whom is entrusted the whole machinery

This is the weak point of his ([two words unclear]) general under[?] [word unclear due] 14th Nov—

The [word unclear] way would be for him to get some zealous & experienced recruiting agent who believes in the negro


I am not sure but I shall come out to St Louis in my official dignity of Chairman of the Cold. [Colored] come. to see the Genl. & offer our co=operation. pecuniary & otherwise. We have from experience in the men who have recruited Blacks & we can save[?] a little more money if [word unclear] for the extra expenses which always allow the starting of a movement—

What should you think of my coming? would it pay a busy man for a winters journey?

N.B. What is your youngest boy doing & what is he fit for besides soldiering? My wife suggests putting him into a RRd. [Railroad] place [word unclear] by Charles Perkins (James Ps oldest son) at Burlington but he would have to go thro some apprenticeship first

Possibly one of these days a place may be open that will begin his education in RRoad matters — if you want him to get into that business!

Write me next at Boston where I shall be in about a week Yrs
