Title
Lid of a Roman seal box
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy Roman seal box. This object represents the partially surviving lid of a seal box. It was once lozenge shaped, but is now missing one corner due to a horizontal break. Presumably it was at this corner that the single transverse lug was to be found, as there is no sign of its survival. The lid is flat, without a flange. It is recessed for enamel with a design of four circles at the centre, which further sub divide the field into sublozenge shapes at each corner and at the very centre. There is one small patch of bright orange enamel in the central sublozenge shape, but otherwise the enamel is missing. The reverse of the lid is plain. The original surface of the object survives well to the rear with a dark green patina, with one small area of exposed bright green surface. The front of the lid is more abraded, but is mostly dark green with greater patches of light green exposed surfaces. The lid has a surviving length of 20.34mm, a complete width of 21.04mm, is 2.22mm thick and weighs 2.67g. It dates from the 2nd-3rd century. Allason-Jones and Miket, 1984, page 153,illustrate a more common form of a lozenge-shaped seal box from South Shields Roman Fort.
