Summary

[edit]
Description The Roanoke River Lighthouse – now sitting in Edenton, NC waiting to be restored by The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. It is the last of fifteen screw-pile Light Stations that once stood on the North Carolina sounds and rivers. Screw-pile lighthouses stand on piles which are screwed into sandy or muddy river or sea bottoms. This one was built in 1902 by the US Coast Guard at the mouth of the Roanoke River and started service in 1903. It was deactivated in 1941. The Edenton Historical Commission bought the Roanoke River Lighthouse for $225,000 and paid $75,000 to have it moved to the current location in the Colonial Park in Edenton, NC. In the United States, screw-pile lighthouses proliferated in the Chesapeake Bay due to its estuarial soft bottom. North Carolina's sounds and river entrances were also once home to many screw-pile lights. The characteristic design is a one and a half story hexagonal wooden building with dormers and a cupola light room.
