Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This message was added automatically by MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner), if you need some help about it, please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ? ->Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 06:37, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Say, thanks for adding all those metacat templates! I've been working on that, too, for a while now. How are you finding the categories that need the template added? --Auntof6 (talk) 07:07, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

@Auntof6: Hi, I am using "PetScan", starting with Category:Topics, with folwing options:
Output->Regexp filter->".* by country".
Templates &links->Has none of these templates:->"MetaCat".
Folows an exemple: [50]. Be free to put any questions if neded. --JotaCartas (talk) 07:20, 13 April 2017 (UTC)
Cool, thanks! I need to learn how to use PetScan better. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:31, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

If you happen to move on to things other than "by country", be aware that not all "by foo" things that look like metacats are actually metacats. There are two main types of these that I've seen:

  • Categories like "People by name", where the subcats aren't groups of different people/things with a common characteristic. Some "by name" cats are metacats (such as Category:Hotels by name) and some aren't, such as men/women/people by name. This issue applies to cats other than "by name", such as cats by registration number (for example, Category:Trams in Lille by registration number), by serial number (for example, Category:Argentine Air Force aircraft by serial number), and probably others -- anything where there's a one-to-one correspondence between the two things specified in the category name.
  • Categories where the "by foo" indicates the sort order for files in the category instead of indicating a grouping. I can't locate one of these right now, but some of the ones I've seen contained files that were graphs, one for each subdivision of some place or other.

If you were already aware of these, forgive me for taking up your time and talk page space. I just wanted to mention some issues I've seen when adding metacat templates. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:10, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

@Auntof6: Yes, I am aware. Categories reverted by me:
To detect bad editions I use CatScan V3.0 exemple, checking for "topcategories" with a high number of files. It also serves to find files that should either be in the relevant subcategory or in the parent category. --JotaCartas (talk) 01:27, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
Cool. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:19, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

@Auntof6: - Hi, I am "mass editing" some categories using "PetScan" to select and "AWB" to edit and insert {{MetaCat|country}}. It is difficult to prevent some errors in categories that having "by country" in the title are not "Meta Categories". To make my job easier I am inserting <!-- {{MetaCat|country}} --> in these categories. I hope it is OK. Regards --JotaCartas (talk) 10:11, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

Yes, those can cause problems. That's why I always check each one that I add the template to. It might help people looking at these in the future if you made the comment say something like "<!--Please do not add {{MetaCat|country}} to this category -->. That way, people would understand why the comment is there. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:54, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
@Auntof6: - Thanks, It's always good to ask someone else's opinion.--JotaCartas (talk) 07:23, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Presumably related: can you explain the logic of this edit? Not saying you are wrong, just that the rationale is entirely unclear to me. - Jmabel ! talk

@Jmabel: Hi,(let's try, I am not so good in English): All categories with template "MetaCat" or "By country category" are in "Categories by country (flat list)" (actualy 26 104); I think that "Categories by country" should be treated as any other standard category (i.e. if a category (C) is in a parent category (B) that is already in "Categories by country" tree (A), then Category (C) should not be directly in the category (A), witch is the case of the example refered).
  • ex: Zoos by country -> Gardens by country -> Gardens and parks by country -> Places by country -> Geography by country -> Categories by country
Otherwise both categories "Categories by country" and "Categories by country (flat list)" would be the exactly the same. At the end of my work, "Categories by country" will have directly about (3 000) categories and all (26 104) will be within "Categories by country" tree. I hope I am right, best regards --JotaCartas (talk) 01:05, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Thanks. And for what it's worth your English seems excellent. - Jmabel ! talk 04:16, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Your VFC installation method is deprecated[edit]

Hello JotaCartas, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:24, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Commons Conference project[edit]

Hello JotaCartas,

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around, but since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Categories whose names start with "Categories of"[edit]

Hi, JotaCartas. I noticed that you tagged quite a few of these categories as metacategories. One of them was Category:Categories of Taiwan by island. Even though their names end with "by" something, they are not metacategories. That's because the "by <foo>" in a metacategory name is a shorthand way of saying "grouped by <foo>", which doesn't apply to these. When tagging a category whose name starts with "Categories of", please use {{catcat}} instead of {{metacat}}. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:14, 14 May 2018 (UTC)
