English: This scroll is made of 22 sheets of paper, and has retained its original wooden roller, which is still attached to the tapered end sheet.
Margins and guidelines divide the textual content of each sheet into 31 vertical rows, and there are 17 characters per line on average, although this number can vary from 16 to 20 characters for sections in verse. The beginning of chapter 8 is missing, so the text starts from “[所為]稀有 ([suo wei] xi you)”and runs to the end of Chapter 13 勸持品第十三 (Quan shi pin di shi san). The scroll therefore contains all the chapters (8-13) that form the 4th juan of Lotus Sutra, as indicated by the text 妙法蓮華經卷第四 (Miao fa lian hua jing juan di si) on the end sheet. There is a colophon on the end sheet: 菩薩戒弟子蕭大嚴敬造 第八百八十九部 (Pu sa jie di zi xiao da yan jing zao di ba bai ba shi jiu bu), translated by Giles as “Reverentially made to the order of Hsiao Ta-yen [Xiao Da Yan], disciple of the Bodhisattva-pratimoksa. 889th piece” (Giles, 1957, p.74, 2708)]. In the twentieth century, the manuscript number 's.3384' was added in black and red ink on the verso of the scroll, after the manuscript was removed from Cave 17. This scroll was conserved and digitised as part of the Lotus Sutra Manuscripts Digitisation Project, generously sponsored by the Bei Shan Tang Foundation. |
