Title |
Lower-Middle Paleolithic ficron handaxe |
||
Description |
English: Palaeolithic Acheulian handaxe of ficron type with a long tapering point and large, partially worked, butt. The point is formed with invasive shallow flaking and is pointed oval in cross section. There are small areas of natural cortex remaining on one side. The point widens and thickens to the large lozenge shaped butt. The widening is a fairly consistant taper down the ficron but the thickness tapers gradually at first before stepping out more steeply half of the way down. The butt is large with some long, shallow flake removals on two sides and the base; the base also has areas of hackled damage in one corner to shape it and blunt the sharp edges. Around the remainding sides of the base there is unworked but worn cortex giving a smooth surface. The butt end in general has smooth edges allowing it to be gripped in the hand.
The axe has developed a very smooth, almost glass like patina and areas are slightly iron stained to a mid-beige. It is 163 mm long, 65.5mm wide, 52.2mm thick and weighs 429 grams. |
