Title |
Lower Palaeolithic Bifacial Hand Axe from Kelstern |
||
Description |
English: Pale grey to brown flint or chert.
Hand Axe. Bifacial symmetrical pointed hand axe of oval section, with a smooth butt formed of the natural cortex of a flint nodule. The flint was extensively worked with prominent conchoidal ripples suggesting the initial use of a hard hammer, reducing the size of what is in effect a core. To judge from the direction of the ripples, much of this working proceeded inwards from both edges of the tool. The marks of working are in general well defined. The original surface of the object is iron stained to a honey colour on one side, and smoky grey on the other, the latter side in particular bears chalky white surface deposit towards the pointed end. Limited irregular fracturing along both edges of the honey coloured side of the tool towards its pointed end appears accidental, deriving from the rolling of the object.
Suggested date: Lower Palaeolithic: 500,000 to 100,000 BC; Bill Bee kindly suggests around 280,000 BC.
Bill Bee kindly examined this object, commenting on the skill implied by the toolmaker's decision to retain the cortex to make a comfortable butt. He highlights a large flake removal scar on one side of the axe as especially important to its satisfactory completion, and indicates that hard hammer work would have been followed by soft hammer finishing. He considers the tool could be used for killing as well as skinning and cutting.
Length: 151.05mm, Width: 78.24mm, Thickness: 40mm, Weight: 470gms. |
