Title
Lower Paleolithic Handaxe
Description
English: Lower Palaeolithic flint hand axe of Wymer's type D (1999), of asymmetrical plan and profile, with fairly straight cutting edges, all flake removals are hard hammer struck. It appears to be worked from a naturally fractured piece of flint rather than a nodule or large flake, the ventral face (the face without annotations) has two addorsed natural flake removals from the offset ridge, likely to be part of the original glacially crushed face of the flint. The dorsal face has a patch of worn cortex extant towards the left lateral edge. The piece is heavily rolled and patinated orange from deposition in iron oxide rich gravels, with (relatively) recent damage to the edges, these are now patinated a lighter colour, with a few areas showing the original mid-grey colour. Although the tip is abraded and damaged, there appears to be no tranchet flake removal to sharpen it, it can be considered a type v point.

The annotations read: ANZAC PIT, WEST DEREHAM, TF 60.675.024 (the number 2 is smudged), - 20ft in clay. there is also a paper sticker that relates to the finder, JOHN.

This is part of an old collection, date of the find is uncertain, but is likely to have been recovered after 1940.
