Title
English: Lumber loading at Port Hadlock, Washington, 1900
Description
English: Port Hadlock, south of Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula, was one of several important Puget Sound lumber mill towns. Lumbermen floated large rafts of logs to the mill where they were cut into lumber. Sailing ships carried the lumber to San Francisco and ports in South America, Hawaii, and Australia. Postal officials later shortened the town's name to Hadlock.

In this 1900 photo, lumber is being loaded onto two ships at Port Hadlock. Stacks of lumber fill the wharf, and the air is filled with steam from the mill's steam engines.
