Description

Lunar Eclipse, October 8, 2014 at 5.40am EDT (9:40 UTC) from Chinatown, New York. The Moon briefly appeared through the clouds, between One World Trade Center (left) and Jacob K. Javits Federal Building (right). The eclipsed part of the Moon appears in deep red shade because it is illuminated by the sunlight refracted through the Earth's atmosphere. In essence, the Earth's atmosphere acts as a huge lens. Only the red color passes through since the shorter (blue) wavelengths are preferentially scattered in the atmosphere (which is also the reason why the sunsets are red and the sky is blue). Lunar eclipse is often called 'blood moon' or 'red moon' in popular media. If not for the Earth's atmosphere the eclipsed part would be completely dark. For another photo which shows the effects of both refraction and scattering in the atmosphere see: www.flickr.com/photos/astronomyatstevens/15124882672/
