Sint-Nicolaas wordt vaak afgebeeld met drie kinderen in een ton. Volgens de legende zijn dat drie jongemannen, die van universiteit naar universiteit trokken. Een herbergier berooft en vermoordt de studenten in hun slaap. Hun lichamen snijdt hij aan stukken die hij in een pekelvat verstopt. Een volgende gast - Sint-Nicolaas - ontdekt echter de misdaad en brengt de jongens met gebed weer tot leven.
