Na de offerande en na de communie wast de priester zijn handen. Voor deze min of meer symbolische handwassing wordt soms een van de ampullen, de kannetjes voor het water en de miswijn, gebruikt. Vaak ook benut men een schenkkan met bekken. In de 13de en 14de eeuw hadden deze kannen veelal de vorm van dieren of fabelwezens.
