Cornelis Willemsz.?, ca. 1515 ABM s314 en s315, aangekocht met steun van Vereniging Rembrandt

Na Jezus’ kruisdood verspreiden de twaalf apostelen die hem tijdens zijn leven begeleidden zich over de wereld. Zij verkondigen het evangelie (Grieks euangelion = goede boodschap). Deze boodschap verwijst naar de aankondiging van Jezus dat het Koninkrijk van God nabij is. Twee apostelen zijn hier weergegeven in een gefantaseerd portret: Petrus en Paulus. Zij worden beschouwd als de belangrijkste verspreiders van het christendom en grondleggers van de Kerk. De Bijbel die Petrus bestudeert, verwijst naar de manier waarop hij mensen onderwijst in de christelijke leer en hen bekeert tot het geloof. In zijn rechterhand houdt hij, als bewaker van de hemelpoort, een sleutel.
