| Description |
English: Gothic reliquary monstrance in the Treasury of the Basilica of Our Lady in Maastricht, Netherlands. The monstrance (height: 77.6 cm) of gilded silver dates from the second quarter of the 15th century, probably from the Rihineland. It was originally used as an ostensorium to exhibit relics, possibly of the saints depicted in the statuettes around the glass cilinder: Saint Peter, Saint, Paul, John the Baptist, Saint Barbara, Saint Catherine, Saint Steven, Saint Francis and Saint Lawrence. These days it contains a relic (part of the clavicle) of Saint Mary Magdalene. Above the cilinder, underneath a baldachin, is a statuette of the Madonna and Child. |
