Notes | Hotchkiss .303 in. No 1 Mark I portable machine-gun with bipod, World War I. Gas-operated, strip-fed, air-cooled .303 inch calibre machine-gun. The Hotchkiss was first developed in France in 1893 and adopted by the French and Japanese armies before the end of the century. In 1908 a new portable model was developed which was used by the British, French and American armies as their first light machine-gun.
