Summary[edit]
DescriptionMakateeskop vanaf Lüneburg, b.jpg |
Afrikaans: Makateeskop (1 737 m) word hier vanaf Lüneburg, sowat 16 km noordwaarts, gesien.
English: Makateeskop (1,737 m) is seen here from Lüneburg, some 16 km away. It is an easterly outlier of the Elandsberg highlands, on the right shoulder of the upper Phongolo River, KwaZulu-Natal. The Ignite Charcoal Factory is located in its foothills. The hill has also been known at times as Makati's Kop, Eloya or Ronde Kop, but perhaps it should be Makhata's Kop, as it appears to take its name from Makhatha ka Ndlukazi (also: Makhatha Shabalala) of the Shabalala clan of the Hlubi people.[1] They were descendants of the eMbo, who arrived here c. 1650. Makhatha was a Hlubi induna / commander-in-chief of the iziYendane regiment under King Bhungane II (ruled 1760–1800). The iziYendane, the most-feared regiment during his reign, was posted in this area along the northern border of Hlubi territory.[2] Consequently the hill's name does not suggest the Makatees (also: Mantatees), a completely different group native to the highveld, who were scattered during the Mfecane.
