Title
Manilla
Description
English: A silver-plated, copper-alloy Manilla from the slave trade era. These objects were a type of African ring money, which were carried on shafts and brought to Britain by slave traders. The manilla's were used as a bartering tool when selling slaves. This example is similar to a small torc, with square terminals, which have been decorative shaped. The hoop and the terminals have been decorated with chevron designs, stars and circles (all of which are engraved). The interior of the hoop is undecorated. These artefacts are often mis-identified as Saxon/Viking objects and as Iron Age torcs.
