Summary
[edit]DescriptionMap of Australia, New Zealand, Cook & Friendly Islands (1900) (18288648358).jpg |
On the 11th of June 1901 the Cook Islands became New Zealand's first South Pacific colony. The borders of New Zealand were extended to incorporate Rarotonga, Aitutaki, both the North and South Cook Islands and Niue. The Cook Islands gained self-governing status in 1965, with defence and foreign affairs being the responsibility of New Zealand, done in consultation with the Cook Islands government. This map comes from the Department of Lands and Survey’s holdings. It dates from 1900 and is one of the earliest examples of a map featuring both New Zealand and the Cook Island territories.
