"An important miniature of Maria Feodorovna (1759-1828), née Sophia Dorothea of Württemberg, full-length, in white silk dress and red surcoat, wearing a blue sash and a cameo of Empress Catherine II as Athena with diamond surround, a paintbrush in her right hand, standing next to a stone plinth draped with red velvet cloth set with an easel supporting a sketch-book containing a drawing of eight of the empress's children, next to a bust of her husband, Tsar Paul I of Russia (1754-1801) and books, a lyre in front of the plinth, stone urn, set in Pavlosk Park, St Petersburg

The original painting of 1795 by Lampi from which the present miniature derives is in Pavlosk Palace, St Petersburg. The palace was built for Tsar Paul I of Russia and was home to Maria Feodorovna after his death. The gardens of the palace are depicted in the background with the Temple of Friendship on the right."
