"Beschreibung Porträt in Dreiviertelfigur in merkwürdig verzeichneter Haltung. Der rechte Arm endet außerhalb des Rahmens. Monogramm F.X.H. Gemahlin von Friedrich Michael von Pfalz-Birkenfeld (1724–1767). I Maria Franziska wurde als Tochter des kurpfälzischen Erbprinzen Joseph Karl Emanuel (1694–1729) und dessen Gemahlin Elisabeth von Pfalz-Neuburg (1693–1728) geboren. Ihr Vater Joseph Karl war der designierte Nachfolger und Schwiegersohn von Karl III. Philipp, dem Kurfürsten der Pfalz. Durch seinen frühen Tod 1729 konnte er allerdings seine Erbschaft nicht antreten. Marias ältere Schwester Elisabeth Auguste von der Pfalz war die Gemahlin des bayerisch-pfälzischen Kurfürsten Karl Theodor (1724–1799). Ihre andere Schwester war Maria Anna von Pfalz-Sulzbach (1722–1790), die mit Clemens Franz de Paula von Bayern (1722–1770) verheiratet war. Nachdem die Linie Pfalz-Sulzbach mit dem Tod Karl Theodors im Februar 1799 im Mannesstamm erloschen war, erbte mit Kurfürst Maximilian IV. (dem späteren König Maximilian I. von Bayern) ein 1756 geborener Sohn Marias die seit 1777 vereinten Kurwürden von Bayern und der Pfalz. Maria wurde somit zur Vorfahrin aller bayerischen Könige bis 1918 und aller heute noch lebenden Wittelsbacher. Allerdings erlebte sie den Aufstieg ihrer Familie nicht mehr. Die Beziehung zu ihrem Mann war seit 1760 gescheitert. Nach ihren eigenen Angaben wurde sie „durch das üble Beispiel des von ihr verachteten Hofes“ verführt, eine Beziehung mit einem Mannheimer Schauspieler einzugehen. Als sie schwanger wurde, entfernte man sie vom Hof. 1767 gebar sie in Straßburg einen Sohn, der später unter dem Namen Karl Friedrich Stephan von Otting, Fünfstetten und Schönfeld als königlich-bayerischer Kämmerer und Generalleutnant seinem Halbbruder König Max I. Joseph diente. Maria Franziska wurde für ihren Fehltritt quasi in Klosterhaft gesteckt; zunächst bei Ursulinen in Metz und dann zu den Augustinerinnen zu Bonneweg (Bonnevoie) im Herzogtum Luxemburg. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes 1767 durfte sie auf Schloss Sulzbach ziehen. Im Jahre 1785 ließ sie Schloss Franziskaruhe errichten. Sie starb im Jahre 1794 und fand in der Pfarrkirche zu Sulzbach ihre letzte Ruhestätte. Ihr Herz wurde getrennt bestattet und befindet sich seit 1983 in der Gnadenkapelle von Altötting.
