Summary[edit]

Description Born enslaved, Mark Thrash gained freedom after the Civil War and from 1864-1922 worked for the War department as a laborer at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. People traveled from across the country to hear stories from the “living memorial” they respectfully called “uncle”. He died in 1943 at 122 years old.
