Douglas-Charles Airport, Dominica, 20 September 2017.

Master of Aircrew Vince Bartlett, from 27 Squadron RAF, talks to local airport staff during a humanitarian needs assessment mission to Dominica. The Caribbean island of Dominica was devasted by the category 5 Hurricane Maria on Sept 19th, and the Prime Minister of the country, Roosevelt Skerrit requested emergency international assistance.

The UK already had military aircraft in the region responding to the damaged caused by Hurricane Irma. A Chinook helicopter from 27 Squadron RAF was tasked to take a needs assessment team to the island on 20 September, made up of expert Royal Engineers, humanitarian advisers from the Department for International Development, the United Nations, Map Action, and members of the Caribbean Disasters & Emergencies Management Agency (CDEMA). The team was the first international assistance mission to arrive on the island at Douglas Charles airport, which was cut-off by the storm.
