Edwin Grey Clements, Royal Navy circular silver medal, 36mm diameter, swivelling suspender, with ribbon obverse- diademed head of Queen Victoria, facing left, legend around- VICTORIA REGINA reverse- crouching lion on a plinth in front of a Protea bush with a single flower, medal name above- SOUTH AFRICA, dated in exergue-1853 ribbon- 32mm wide grosgrain, yellow ribbon with a wide and a narrow dark blue stripe on either side named on edge- E G CLEMENTS Markings- obverse- medallist's name on truncation of Queen's neck- W. WYON R.A. reverse- medallist's name at the bottom below the year- L.C. WYON

Notes South African War Medal 1834-1853 Medal awarded to A.B. Edwin Grey Clements, Royal Navy. A.B. Edwin Grey Clements served with the Royal Navy in the South Africa War, 1850-1853, the Baltic War 1854, and the China War 1854-1855 Before coming to New Zealand in 1859 he had served 10-1-2 years with the Royal Navy on the ships HMS Castor 1849-53, HMS Duke of Wellington 1853-4, HMS Nankin 1855-9. He received three campaign medals- the China War Medal 1857-1860 with Canton bar, the South African Campaign Medal 1834-53, and the Baltic Medal 1854-55. His wife was Mrs Ellen Mary Clements. EG Clements died in 1914
