Notes | St. Jean d'Acre Medal, 1840 Probably the medal awarded to Captain William Horton, Royal Navy. Medal for Battle of Forts at St Jean d'Acre (Sultan of Egypt); Syria, 1840. Medals awarded in 1843 by the Sultan of Turkey to British, Austrian and Turkish forces under Sir Charles Napier, taking part in the liberation of St Jean d'Acre (on Syrian Coast) after eight years of Egyptian occupation. British recipients included Royal Navy, Royal Marines and British Army. The clasp 'SYRIA' to the Naval General Service Medal was awarded in 1848 for this action and the Naval GSM usually accompanies this medal. As the medal is silver it indicates that the recipient was a Quarter-Deck or Warrant Officer. Reference- Medal Yearbook 2008, no 106, p142. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
