Notes Turkish Crimea Medal (British), 1854-56 There were three different versions of the Turkish Crimea medal - one for The British, another for the French and a third, Sardinian issue. To distinguish each the order of the four flags on the reverse varied. The central right flag was the flag of the country to which the medal was issued - the British Union Jack, the French Tricouleur, or the Italian Tricolore bearing the arms of the House of Savoy. In addition the inscription in the exurgue reads exergue reads "Crimea 1855" for British issue, "La Crimee 1855" for French issue, and "La Crimea 1855" for Sardinian issue. However, many British recipients received the Sardinian medal as many British medals intended for distribution were lost in a shipwreck.
