English: Regimental Order of Merit 3rd Class Connaught Rangers (1818) Medal awarded to Richard Jones, 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiment of Foot. circular medal; damaged on upper edge obverse- seated female figure (Hiburnia) to left, holding laurel wreath (lhs); with harp on rhs; mountains in background; line rim reverse- laurel wreath with numeral 88 at top encircling engraved battle names in six lines- NIVE - VITTORIA - PYRENEES - TOULOUSE - NIVELLE - ORTHES; line rim name engraved on edge- RICHARD JONES Note that suspension was usually by two rings, the lower through a perforation in the medal; the ribbon was the Waterloo ribbon.

Notes Order of Merit 3rd Class Connaught Rangers, 1818 Medal awarded to Richard Jones, 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiment of Foot Medal engraved with following battle honours- Nive 9th-13th December 1813 Vittoria 21st June 1813 Pyrenees 25th July - 2nd August 1813 Toulouse 10th April 1814 - Connaught Rangers suffered 86 casualties Nivelle 10th November 1813 Orthes 27th February 1814 - Connaught Rangers suffered 269 casualties Order of Merit, Connaught Rangers (88th Regt.). Approval for this medal was sought by Col. Wallace 1818, and permission was not withheld. The striking was paid for by the Regiment's Officers. Three classes - 1st Class (70 struck)- NCOs with 12 battle credits 2nd Class (145 struck)- soldiers with 12 battle credits 3rd Class ( 217 struck)- soldiers with 6 or less battle credits. Medal rolls record the award of an Order of Merit, 3rd Class to Richard Jones. Regimental awards are not common and are much sought after.
