Title
Medieal bulla
Description
English: An incomplete and damaged, cast lead alloy bulla (seal) of Pope Gregory IX dating to the period 1227-1241 AD. The seal is missing c. 30% due to old breaks and it is bent and all surfaces worn. It measures 38.97mm wide, 41.4mm long, 6.06mm thick and weighs 34.41g.

Side 1: Busts of St. Paul and St. Peter. Both busts are each positioned within a beaded aureole, a glow of light similar to a halo. Both heads are enclosed within a border of pellets (or pearls). Above the busts is an inscription 'SPA SPE'. A large, deep crack runs between the busts, but does not puncture the reverse.

Side 2: Inscription 'GREGORIVS PP IX ' (in three lines). PP is an abbreviation for 'pastor pastorum', meaning 'shepherd of the shepherds'. The second P and the numerals for 9th are missing due to the break.
