Title
Medieval: Incomplete lyre buckle frame and box chape
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy buckle and box chape, of Medieval dating (AD 1390 to AD 1420).

Around 75% of the buckle is present, consisting of the box chape and part of the frame. The front of the box chape has been decorated with two upright hexagons, with a central line or two letters in a black letter script. The back of the box chape is plain and undecorated. Two iron rivets are present at the end of the chape. Iron corrosion products are present inside the chape. The chape extends into the buckle frame with two ridges and a concave recessed area. A pin hole is present at the centre.

It measures 33.7 mm in length, 15.4 mm wide and 6.3 mm thick. It weighs 7.7 g.

The buckle is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

A similar lyre shaped buckle frame has been published as no 219 in Whitehead (1996, p37) and has been dated to the Medieval period (AD 1390 to AD 1420).
