Title
Medieval/ post-medieval buckle
Description
English: A medieval to post-medieval (1350-1650) copper alloy annular buckle frame with a central bar and sheet pin (of a different copper alloy to the frame), and retaining part of a sheet buckle plate (of a different copper alloy to both frame and pin).

The frame is partly triangular in cross-section and partly square in cross-section. The central bar is trapezoidal in cross-section (2.4 to 1.8mm x 2.6mm) with a slightly narrower upper surface (the face the pin tip rests on). The frame has no decoration and a slightly pitted dark green patina. It measures 24.6mm in diameter, the internal loops measuring c.7.5x17-18mm.
The pin has a smooth, blue-green patina, is rectangular in cross-section where it curves around the bar and square in section where it narrows to a rounded point at the opposite end, which rests on the frame.
The buckle plate (0.3mm thick) is a purplish-brown in colour with a rough surface. Only one face remains, inclusive of the arms created by a central pin-slot. These arms curve around the central bar. The opposite end of the plate has a worn break.

The object measures 24.6mm in diameter, 2.8mm in max.thickness and weighs 4.08g.

Similar annular buckles have been illustrated (Whitehead 2003: 44-45).
