Title |
Medieval "lyre" shaped hollow strap end |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy strap end dating from the late medieval period. The strap end is the sort with a hollow socket and ornate decoration, sometimes knows as lyre shaped. In this example, the lyre shaped decoration has broken off, leaving just the hollow socket. This is 23.9mm long, 21.5mm wide and 7.1mm thick. It is an integrally cast box with the corroded remains of two rivets at the attachment end which would have held the strap in place. The front of the box is decorated with a blackletter lower case A on a background of wavy lines. There are three raised moulded bars above, before the broken edge. The reverse is undecorated except for some slight traces of silvering. The metal has a glossy green patina. A similar but complete example can be seen on page 270 (number 1) of Ward-Perkins (1940) London Museum Medieval Catalogue. The strap end dates from the late fourteenth or fifteenth century. |
