Title
Medieval 'Boy bishop' token
Description
English: A lead-alloy 'Boy bishop' token, dating from the Late Medieval to post-Medieval periods.

The token is sub-circular and is decorated on both sides. The obverse design is that of a Bishop's mitre, with the legend 'SANCTVS NICHOLAVS' extending clockwise from 2 o'clock. The reverse bears the standard long-cross penny design, with three pellets in each quarter and the legend '[A]VE/REX/GEN/TIS' ('Hail, King of the [English] people') around the perimeter.

Dimensions: 16.3mm diameter, 1.2mm thick. Weight: 1.54g.

The Boy bishop custom involved choosing a choirboy to temporarily take over the office of the Bishop, from the Feast of St. Nicholas, on December 6th, to the Feast of the Holy Innocents, on 28th December. During this time leaden tokens, redeemable for goods, were handed out as alms. Parallels for this token include PAS records BH-0FC064, BH-0FC4B6 and BH-0FC733.
