Title
Medieval : Padlock
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy barb-spring barrel padlock of medieval date. The lock is comprised of an elongated hollow case which is ovate in section, closed at one end and open at the other. The upper aspect of the padlock also has a long rectangular opening to one end of which is a trilobed decorative projection in line with the closed end. To the opposite end of the opening a rectangular box projection is present with two perforations angled from the top to either side. Two sub-rectangular arms set on an integral fluted panel extend from the lower aspect of the case, each terminating in a transverse loop set at 90 degrees to the arm. A bolt bar would have passed through these loops.

Similar padlocks from pre-fourteenth-century contexts are illustrated in Egan (1998), p.93-94 from although they have also been found in fourteenth contexts (Geake 2001, 50-51). A similar example has also been recorded on the PAS database as LIN-7F2226.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The padlock is 33.9mm long, 10.2mm wide, 34.3mm thick and weighs 18.1g.
