Medieval - Post Medieval double looped oval buckle (front and back views) |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle, dating from the 14th-16th century, between AD 1350 – 1600 (length: 34.5mm; width: 24mm; thickness at pin: 6mm; weight: 3.7g). The buckle is double oval looped in plan and is D-shaped in section. The buckle does not appear to be decorated and the cast copper alloy pin is still intact, which loops round the central strap bar and extends fully to the outer buckle frame. One side of the outer buckle frame is narrower than the other side, possibly suggesting continued use ( or just corrosion?). The back of the buckle is flat and undecorated. Overall, the buckle is in a worn and corroded condition with none of the original patina remaining. Similar examples are illustrated in Egan, G & Pritchard, F, 2002 edition, ‘Medieval Finds from Excavations in London: 3: Dress Accessories c. 1150 – c. 1450’, pages 82-3, ref nos 332, 333, 337 & 339. |
