Title |
Medieval Annular Brooch or Buckle Pin |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy annular brooch or buckle pin of Medieval date. It is made from a flat strip of copper alloy that tapers towards a rounded terminal at one end, and at the other curls backwards to form a loop where it would have been attached to the now missing brooch frame. Half way along the length of the pin it has a thicker, raised rectangular area. the exterior face of this raised area is decorated with a horizontal groove below which are six stamped ring and dot motifs. There are traces of gilding in the groove and the ring and dots. The remainder of the pin is undecorated.
This example measures 56.08mm in length, 9.31mm in width, 3.91mm in thickness, and weighs 12.12g. Near identical examples dated to the 13th-15th centuries can be noted in Hattat (1989: pp. 382, fig. 241, no. 179), Read (1995: pp. 63, no. 293) and on the PAS database (DENO-E362F7). These parallels suggest that this example dates to a similar period and served as the pin for a Medieval annular brooch or buckle frame. |
