Title |
Medieval Barrel Padlock from near Market Rasen |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy barrel padlock fragment. Cast cylinder with faceted sides, probably octagonal. A plate at one end bears the remains of a cruciform keyhole, broadened by wear. At the other end there remains a heavily worn plate through which leaf springs passed when the lock was closed. An arm rises above it from the body of the case, surmounted by a smaller knopped lug. A drilled hole of diameter 4mm at the base of the arm was probably to attach the lock, possibly with a light chain (lost) passing through this and a further ragged aperture on the underside of the barrel. Decoration comprises two groups of five circumferentially incised lines, possibly retaining traces of tin, which are only traceable around the lower part of the barrel. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1300.
Length: 32.5mm, Diameter (barrel): 13.4mm, Thickness (barrel wall): 1.8mm, Weight: 13.62gms. |
