Title
Medieval Hair Pin (illustration by Jason Gibbons)
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy pin with an integral loop on the top of a biconical head and with a hipped shank. The head is decorated with oblique grooves around its upper part above a circumferential groove. There is a small collar at the junction of head and shank. The shank is slightly bent. Length 31mm. Head diameter 6mm. Weight 1.07g.

Similar, short, hipped pins in copper alloy and bone have been identified at Winchester (Biddle 1990, 554, fig.150 nos.1437-8), Norwich (Margeson 1993, 9, fig.4 nos.24-5 and Castle Acre Castle (Goodall in Coad and Streeten 1982, 239, fig.44 no.48 and Margeson in op. cit. 248-251, fig.47 nos.23-45). Margeson, who cited numerous other examples, many from high status sites, suggested that they were too short for use as dress pins and were probably employed in head-dresses, to decorate braids or secure veils. It is clear, from the contexts of many such pins, that they were current in the late eleventh and twelfth centuries. In 2006 a silver example was found at Edgefield, Norfolk (HER 44094, Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 132, no. 559)
