Title
Medieval Papal Bull, reverse
Description
English: Lead Papal Bulla dating to 13th century. These seals were used on official papal documents (bulls) sent out from Rome as a means of authentication. The use of these seals was at it's peak in the late 14th - early 15th century. The obverse shows the busts of Saint Paul and Saint Peter within a vesica shaped beaded border with the abbreviation SPASPE written above. Between the saints is a staff with a cross pattee shaped terminal. The reverse of the bulla has a beaded border with the inscription: VR/ BANVS/ PPIIII on three lines in the centre for Pope Urban IV who reigned between 1216-64. PP stands for pastor pastorum 'shepherd of the shepherds'. The seal weighs 39.69g and measures 37.29mm in diameter and 4.9mm in thickness.
