Title |
Medieval Single Loop Buckle with Integrally Cast Plate |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy single loop buckle frame with integral cast plate. The buckle loop is oval in plan and has a lipped pin rest. Traces of an iron pin remain in the circular pin hole, the sides of which project into the buckle loop. The buckle measures 16.2mm long by 17.2mm wide and 2.1mm thick The fixing plate is 25.3mm long, 15.8mm wide, 1.2mm thick and takes the form of a wide collar topped by a fleur d'lis. There is an integral rivet on the rear, at the top of the lis which still has the remains of the rivet. There is a further rivet hole in the centre of the plate. The buckle frame and plate weighs 3.4 grams. Although no exact parallel was found this fits within the series of spur buckles with elaborate integral plates dated c.1250-1400. See Whitehead (2003) page 32-35.
