Title
Medieval Spur Buckle
Description
English: An incomplete and misshapen Medieval spur buckle (c. 1200-c. 1400). This buckle consists of a small central plate with a loop at one end a hook at the opposite end. The central plate was furnished with a transverse arm terminating with a circular knop at each end. The loop is square in plan and measured about 18.5 x 18.5mm before being broken and misshapen. It is roughly square in cross-section. Between the loop and the central plate there is neck (minimum width 7.7mm) with concave sides which are bevelled on the upper face. There are the remains of an iron pin centrally positioned on the loop, adjacent to the neck. The central plate is sub-rectangular in plan (13.0 x 9.8mm) and has a rearward projecting integral hook, now misshapen. This hook 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear, throughout its length. The central plate has the remains of a soldered transverse arm, convex at the front and flat at the rear, which originally extended outwards and terminated at each end with a circular knop. However, only one half of this element survives due to a break. The surviving knop is slightly convex at the front and flat at the rear. The copper-alloy is generally corroded and has traces of a mid-green and dark green patina. It has traces of gilding. 53.8 x 20.7 x 16.6mm. Weight: 13.69g.
